Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Up-Rez HD to 4K

Bandwith and MPEG in the same sentence does not make sense.
Mpeg is fine as a broadcast delivery format. For a HUGE amount of work it's fine as an inbetween /acquisition format.
Delivery in H265 (note the 5) can be way smaller.
Do note, on comopresssion, all images contain a house, dog, tree, and that compresses way more effective at higher resolutions.
So, 4K is NOT taking as much bandwith as you might think.
(but i still believe it's nonsense as a delivery format for 99% of what the listers here do.)
And 'reframing' for badly framed shots? WTF?

Agreed Pete. If the folks pimping 4K really cared about quality to the consumer, we would be sending 10 or 12 bit 444 to them now. But alas, MPEG it is...

More to the point, is more pixels the best use of the bandwidth?

I contend there's more perceived quality in increased bit depth than increased spatial resolution. Even in 16mm.

And some people hate wasting capital just because Sony can't make money selling TVs anymore. :-/
