Scanning resolution is a big deal, especially for grainy film. Look here to see some grainy Super-8 scanned at three resolutions — up to 2.8K — and see what is gained. It goes against the conventional wisdom that smaller formats don't benefit from higher scanning resolution.

I think that when I'm scanning film from the 40's and 50's sharpness is limited by grain. Wouldn't grain size be a limiting factor? In any case, seems to me, up-rezing after the scan should not yield any additional details. The film should have been scanned to yield 4K frames.Best Wishes,PaulFrom: "David Dodson davidadodson@sbcglobal.net [Avid-L2]" <Avid-L2@yahoogroups.com>

Subject: Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Up-Rez HD to 4KRight. I understand all this. The real question is more-or-less two-fold. 1) Does 4K mine out more detail from 16mm neg, and 2) what kind of hit does HD res material take when being upscaled to a 4K master? Thanks!DDOn May 8, 2015, at 9:43 AM, 'Dom Q. I agree that generally 2K/1080 is more than sufficient for 16mm.Even some modern 35mm films went through a 2K DI process.Dom Q.
