Has anyone had cause to up-scale 1080p material to a 4K master?
I ask because I'm working on a feature that has black and white 16mm that was transferred to ProRes4444 at 1920x1080p. Now they're considering mastering to 4K. There is a lot of interview footage that was shot at 5K with the Epic, and the producers are interested in future-proofing their deliverables by doing a 4K master. But what happens to the ProRes 4444 1080p material once it's "blown up" to 4K? Acceptable? Ugly? It's important to remember that this show is destined for the big screen.
Anyone have any direct experience with something like this? Given that the ProRes4444 HD material is from 16mm black and white neg, is there more to be gained by re-transferring the 16mm neg to 4K? Opinions welcome.
Thanks,
DD
