I bought a QNAP TurboNAS TS-421last December, put 12TB in it, RAID 5, 4TB still empty. Has been running very well, easy to set up and use, pretty fast. I haven't benchamarked it, but it 'feels' faster than a USB2 drive... Pretty quiet and smart about spinning down and energy saving when not being accessed. But when you want to use it, waiting for the spin-up is not onerous. Would buy another.
Using it to backup/semi-archive media files, and as a TimeMachine backup disk for my laptop.

Need a SAN, not too heavy (some 8 TB will be enough), just one workstation. (But i need a NAS as i'm afraid it will be noixy, so moving it away would be nice) Any experiences with Qnap? Drobo? Something else?
