Was gonna head down to Guitar Center this morning and give a few things a listen. Was also hoping to head over to a few rental shops and see what they've got.

I like the higher-end KRK monitors, but I'm not a big fan of their Rokit. As you say, bass heavy heading towards muddy.
Can you get to a big music or audio store and give some options a listen?
