Thanks for the terminology correction. How bout I say duplicating the composition leads to pre-comps that just don't compute, pre or post? ;-) I would think this is such a common everyday need that it shouldn't require a specialty plugin/script. I build a Lwr 3rd master template using Pre-comps as needed and then I want to reuse the template with all the different cast members and their specific text without losing the original templates information. Clearly I'm not embracing the hierarchical nature of compositions and precomps in AE.

The script you found is the way to go. But for your future reference, your issue here is pre-comps (pre-compositions), not pre-computes. Pre-comps are active sources that can be re-entered into any number of compositions.
Depending on the number of levels of pre-comps involved (pre-comps inside of pre-comps, ad nauseum), it can get pretty crazy.
