I'm not an AE expert, but the script is probably the best way to go. Another option might be to create a unique project for each lower third. You could then import all of the projects into a master project for rendering and archiving.

This "True Comp Duplicator seems to make a new comp with all the hierarchical elements like precomputes. Is this really that hard to do? Is there some special super duper duplication command that would accomplish this built into AE? This seems like such a common place need for building template like graphics and creating unique versions of say all the cast members. What am I missing beside years of AE experience?
