[Avid-L2] Re: OT: Early 2011 17" MBP vs Mid 2014 15" MBP

From my recent order to upgrade my 17 inch 2009 MBP it was possible to get an 980GB SSD drive:

DIY Upgrade Bundle: 960GB Mercury Electra 3G Solid State Drive

It just arrived so I haven't installed it yet but according to OWC it should work in my MBP.  I'm told my big handicaps are the processor isn't beefy enough and I can only install 8GB or ram which will probably make Ver. 7 very sluggish.  I don't edit on it much but use it for assistance on the job farming out some Avid and Adobe tasks with CS 4.  I do use the express 34 with an esata card to copy media and that proves to be helpful for leaving the desktop edit station free of the chore.  I'm going to keep it going as long as I can.  Given I have a MacPro symphony setup at home I don't have to rely on my laptop for my main editing so that might be a big reason for you to upgrade to the latest and greatest.  Are you running Ver. 7 on you MBP without issue.  Given it's an i7 I suppose it doesn't suffer from my cpu shortcomings.  I did get mine with 3.06 GHZ so that helps a little.

Dear Mighty List,

More or less I run my business and do my editing with my laptop. (Even
if I am using someone else's system I bring it along.)

I am mulling on swapping my Early 2011 17" MPB for a Mid 2014 15" MBP
refurb and I am wondering if it is worth it. After selling the 17" the
cost difference is probably around $2K.

So...anyone traded in their trusty 17" MBP for a new MBP?

Below are more details and some thoughts but interested in any
reactions...

Thanks,

Dan

The 17" is a 2.2 GHz i7 with a Matte Screen, 16 GB of memory, an OWC
480 GB SSD, and the ExpressCard/34 slot which I haven't been using much
lately. I've read that the GPU on this model has failed in lots of these
machines, many just after falling out of Applecare. I've had some issues
waking from sleep recently which may be related but may not. It is out
of Applecare.

The mid 2014 15" is a 2.8 GHz i7, 16 GB Memory and a 1TB Flash drive. It
is the Dual Graphics model.

Advantages to the 17" are matte screen, screen size for editing (though
most of the time I work with an additional 27" monitor), DVD player, the
flexibility of the ExpressCard/34....(and not spending any money today
so I can spend it tomorrow when the new MBP comes with a shiny Jetpack!)
It also runs everything back to 10.6.8 I think though I am currently at
10.9.

Advantages to the 15" are Retina screen, USB3 and TB2, additional TB
port, processor speed and a 1TB flash, a size which I don't believe is
possible on the 17". I own but haven't used much an ExpressCard/34 to
Thunderbolt Adapter which negates that advantage in the 17". I am also
somewhat tired of lugging a 17" around (and these days it is almost
impossible to use on a plane.) The 15" comes with Yosemite but I have
confirmed it can use a 10.9 install keeping my Symph ver 7 active for
PhraseFind.
