Can a new iMac be back revved to 10.6.8? I would assume launching it in target mode would allow this but I've never tried. Legacy san compatibility would be the reason to back rev. I'll have to check what the qualified Mac OS's are for Unity 5 medianet. Have you had any experience with the TB to fibre adapters?
