I've had similar audio filter problems in Windows along with showstopper issues in multicam. I did report it but have had no response.
I took a trip back to 7.04 and all is well and stable in that build. Same hardware, all drivers met requirements.
I will boldly say that Media Composer 8.1 is simply not production ready.
Do not update/install unless you have a strong stomach.

I just tried it today on another Mac Pro. On this machine a 29.97i project doesn't seem to have an issue. On a 23.98p project, using the spacebar didn't crash the application, but caused the viewer video to start glitching like crazy.
