TP matters because the audio can't dtay in tge digital domain.
We can't hear digits we have to go back to analogue at some point and that equipment had to know the maximum value tgat could occur or we will get clipping.
We forget that the digital process isn't perfect anf true peak is an example of how imperfect the process is. But that's ok as we have tools that can measure TP so we can deal with it. But we can't ignore it.
