Autodesk has been doing subscriptions for years. They call it a support contract. If your want the latest version of Maya, Smoke, etc. then you need a support contract. If you let your contract lapse for one release, they charge you more to reactivate it. If you let your contract lapse for two releases, they charge you even more to reactivate it. If you let your contract lapse for three releases, they make you buy the product again as if you had never owned it.

It seems they are following Adobe and moving some of their products to subscription instead of upgrades. I wonder a Smoke or Flame would cost per month?
