Re: [Avid-L2] Avid's biggest challenges

What saddens me is that few companies seem to care about what cutting involves or what the needs of modern day productions are. Sure, NLE's are a commodity. So are smart phones, yet there is a variety of products, from cheap burners to high-end wannahave gadgets. There is choice, between products that are actually different from each other.

As a film editor, I have very, very little choice, and the products are not different enough. The only company that has recently showed some forward thinking has been Apple, but they – for now – refuse to play outside of their own sandbox, which makes it unsuable for my everyday needs.

The other three, Adobe, Avid and Lightworks, are all playing catch-up. All of them contain heaps of crippled, unfinished features. Adobe may have the most R&D money to go places, but since they feel they need to charge non-US customers over 45% more than US customers (not including taxes) and refuse to comment on it, I'm not inclined to take my business to them, until they actually come up with the better product, rather than with a somewhat viable not-too-different alternative.

People suggest breaking out Avid audio. To me, that seems so backwards. The best way forward would be to finally bring all those post products closer together. We work in so many convoluted, cumbersome ways, every day. Things could be SO much easier if tech companies would actually see and get what modern productions need to pull off daily. Avid has never found a way to pull it off. PT and MC integration is cumbersome at best. Hell, Avid can't even integrate MC and ISIS nicely enough. Just try and run a project off an internal SSD drive, then move the project onto the ISIS Projects workspace and see how much slower the whole thing becomes.

Sigh.
