Re: [Avid-L2] Centralized Storage

for over 2 years now we've used VIDSHARX with one of the mac avid workstations as the 'server' dual 4gig fibre attached to some raid arrays that are regulare mac volumes to the system.

it then SMB shares projects and 'workspaces' to other clients that attache through the ethernet network.  provides full (albeit slightly different) avid project sharing between and within project with multiple machines with locking mechanisms.  works great, caveat is that avid still will not FIX the problem with the new software to enable the fancy background services to recognize network volumes.  so if you don't need the background transcode and DMF then this is by far the most affordable as you can repurpose any mac attachable fast storage you already have

i think the software is 2k for lots of clients and you then supply either a standalone mac or use one of your edit stations as the 'server' and attache whatever storage you want, as long as it is as fast to the server in and out to your clients as you need.

david norden is the man there that developed it.

ama works fine, pcs can also connect but like all the other storage options you are messed up with ama linking. so for me it is a win all around.

sorry if the avid storage group is around listening, but this fits just fine.  take it from me, i've had MNet since 2000 and got off of it to this a couple years ago because i didn't want to trash my investment in the storage and go with isis.  i don't need interplay so these are also considerations.  if you need the host of avid enhanced services like interplay or sphere, you need avid.

Subject: [Avid-L2] Centralized Storage

Hello Listers,

I'm in the process of updating our storage situation from shuttle drives to a centralized solution. We are looking to start with around 12 TB and 5 seats, but want to be able to expand, if necessary.

We have been looking at Terrablock and feel Isis is probably bigger than our britches.

I'd love to hear your feedback regarding your centralized storage setup, and what kinds of questions I should really be asking the folks that are quoting their products to me.

Best,
Michael Kedor
