I say:
As I recall from a lifetime ago, it was the PVW 1800 and its brethren that did not have an 'auto' reference switch selection. That meant that the machine was always running in the 'Input Video' reference mode, even during playback. This most likely was because the machine was not equipped with a separate external reference input; all reference was through the input video connection. I'm sure it was a cost-saving measure, eliminating the need for the circuitry and switching associated with a separate external reference input.
