I had this problem with a desktop DVD recorder I had.
I used IfoEdit to flag my anamorphic DVDs as 16x9.

I set the display parameters and it plays back correctly, 16x9, in QTPro 7. Is there a way using Toast to make a DVD to set the anamorphic flag so DVD players will playback the image letter boxed. I know there is a flag accessible in DVDSP IIRC. Anybody Toast savvy and knows where to find that menu item if it exists in toast.
