I had a relatively good experience with that same $300 data recovery, although in my case they ultimately couldn't get any data back, and didn't charge me. And no Facebook posts on my behalf.

They have an online questionnaire that will help predict their success - smart business since they offer results or no charge- or rather, no charge if they can't get your data back. So the 'online interview' helps weed out drives they think they probably can't fix to begin with- and saves you the trouble of mailing the drive if they think they can't fix it.
