Totally agree.
DS did this (like a lot of other stuff) right.

My perspective:Whenever you make a change in the Effect Editor Window through what Avid calls "Direct Manipulation" (DM) a keyframe is automatically created. If all I want to do is resize and repo (let's say), _without animation_, it's frustrating because if I leave the keyframe (as opposed to to deleting it, which is annoying) and then come back later and adjust (with DM) I can easily/accidentally create animation when I don't want it. I'd prefer to be able to toggle AutoKeyframing on when it's helpful and off when it's not. This is the logic of the more recent versions of After Effects as well.

I agree that you should have the option to turn it off, but I can't really think of too many (or any) instances where it'd be more useful than having it on.
Keyframing in Avid is much more in depth than you'd think at first (or second or third) glance. Based on the source media in your screen grab, have you read chapter 2 of the pro effect and compositing book?
