Re: [Avid-L2] does 5d Mk3 have reliable time code?

Jim,
What is so difficult about sending TC to one of the audio channels?
(Except that the sound is never sync, but that can be compensated...)
On multiple clips, 'read audio tc' is pretty solid / straightforward
process....

Granted, you need a transmitter or padded wire, but that is doable, and
still cheaper than a Lockit.

Bouke (whoms income highly depends on FCP guys doing exactly this...)

Well, depends what you mean by reliable timecode. <audio guy demi-rant> You
can't jam the 5Dm3 TC from an external TC source. And you can't use the 5Dm3
as a master to jam external recorders (not that you'd want to…the clock's
not super accurate). So that's a limitation. We still feed it reference
audio from the recorder and/or dumb slate, handclap, or dog clicker; simpler
than sending TC over audio or attaching a lockit to those cameras… The
5Dm3's I've seen had kind of funky clocks. Some wander, some seem OK. But
overall a bit better than the clock in the 5Dm2 (anecdotally).

If only the camera had nicer audio preamps; then I'd be happier about the
audio I end up sending to those cameras. But in this "almost good enough"
world, the 5Dm3's timecode and audio are almost almost good enough. </audio
guy demi-rant>

However, as a reference for paper notes, I agree that the 5Dm3 time display
is useful.
