[Avid-L2] OT: OTA Antenna Placement can 30 feet really make a difference?

I've been remodeling the house and the roof with new antenna to replace my circa 15 year old TV Antenna.  I doubled the mast from 10 to 20 feet and added a rotator and a new high gain channel master antenna and aimed it at Mt. Wilson in LA.  I got great signal strength, up in the mid 90's for KABC channel 7, and all the local stations came in except for Ch. 2 KCBS.  I was seeing a lot of sway in the top 10 feet of the 20 foot mast even with guy wires at 10 feet.  I went to the Ham Radio store and got a 20 foot mast with two sets of guy rings and put that approx 30 feet south on my middle chimney of the house.  In the new location my KABC strength is in the high 70's down from the 90 plus but now I get channel 2 and all the other locals.  My question is does 30 feet make that big a difference in OTA DTV.  It has in my case but I'm curious what people with more RF and transmission savvy have to say.  I'm told Channel 2 is on a different peak of Mt. Wilson than other transmitters so I get there's a slight difference but according to antennaweb.org they are all at a direction of 72 degrees from my house.  I was also told that being on a separate peak Ch. 2 might not line of sight as well to my antenna but I'm  just surprised that 30 feet south has made such a difference.  Is there some sound RF physics to back up a 30 foot move making such a drastic difference or am I just experiencing dumb luck?  In all my efforts getting the equipment and putting up the new mast I am flabbergasted at how many people believe you can no longer get TV over the air now that we've gone digital.  The misinformation seems almost like a conspiracy to keep people slaves to Cable/Sat service.  I thought with all the government rebates on DTV converter boxes everbody knew you can still use an antenna.  Guess I was wrong.  Also the antennaweb.org site seems to constantly change the number of available channels it predicts for my location.  It's gone from a robust number of stations to a scant number and yet I'm getting virtually all the stations so whose been remapping antennaweb.org?  Once again it seems like a Cable/Sat conspiracy.  Can you tell I've just finished a JFK special so conspiracy is my favorite word, along with my 2nd antenna theory..  ;-)
