Yup- deleting all the 'state' and that sort of stuff solved the problem. I've been back and forth between 7.01b3 and 7.02, so something may of just gotten hinky.
Of course, really wish I'd just moved the whole thing to resolve...

Not sure I am following. So you are working in segment mode and the effects are applying as if source clip name mode?
