Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Comcast, Uverse of FIOS?

A few comments about large files over IP:
It's important to understand that some systems are inherently
asynchronous - notably cable, which is designed to send video to your
house fast. But upload? No so much.
Some systems lose QOS (Quality of service) based on the number of
systems trying to use it at the same time, again cable.
Some tech is distance dependent, e.g. DSL - the farther you are from
your local amplifier, the worse your service. Regardless of numbers of
users.
Fibre is faster than anything, but only to the extent that it actually
is optical fibre. Not fibre to the end of your block and copper the rest
of the way.
There are some systems that use a microwave link to connect your dish
atop a 30-50ft antenna directly to the local backbone. Really damn fast,
but you need line of sight to the receiving tower.
Based on this: FIOS has the best probability of being fastest, but
depends on your specific circumstance.
Also some IP protocols are inherently faster e.g UDP vs HTTP, but they
deprive the rest of your system of bandwidth, so uploading a large file
using something like Aspera will slow your email.
