Thanks, Ben. I started to work on it at around 4:45am for air at 8:33. But it had to be completed by 7:30 for screening and approval, so figure it took 2 and 3/4 hours to complete, plus any revisions and adding Kate Snow's voice track (her track was recorded at around 7:30). This time includes gathering the source material, not just cutting. This was not unusual turnaround time for a last-minute edit like this one. But I have done them in much less time than this. Once a few months ago, I was asked to cut one of these with 1 and a 1/2 hour's notice. It was barely done in time, but aired as if all was well. Home viewers have no idea of the shenanigans that go on immediately before air.
I typically do not cut spots; I'm a tease/opens guy. But they expect us to be able to do it all, so our best people (that includes me) work on what's called 'Day-of-Air'. This means just about anything last-minute that must be done. So the reason I pointed out this edit is because I don't do them very often. I also wanted to mention that it's audio was unusual in that it was TRUE 5.1 surround sound . . . . not just the 3 front channels; I used all 6 channels for this one. That's almost never done here for news spots.
