Bouke's got MXF Creator that can convert it outside of Avid. The files are native Avid MXF and you just drag them into the Avid MediaFiles folder and the Media Tool can find them and drag them into a bin... no import time.
However, as you mentioned with GoPro, you sometimes want to look at the stuff and determine what's actually valuable before importing. If you look back at the thread I just started about 24fps AMA, there are a lot of solutions there that will work for you.
I just bought something called BRORSoft Video converter (horrible name), but it worked to create DNxHD files. The difference between that and Bouke's app was that it lets you SEE the files and select the ones you want to convert first. So all of the crap takes wouldn't take up time and space. Screen them first there. Of course, with GoPro footage, you can screen them using QT viewer or nearly anything since they're just MPEG-4 clips.
Others pointed out that you can also use Adobe Media Encoder or even Premiere to open the files, select the parts you want and just export those.
I can't believe that GoPro footage doesn't AMA! I'll have to try it some time. I mostly use my GoPro for non-pro projects (ironically, I guess) so I've edited with it, but don't think I've ever AMA'd it.
