I reformatted the drive (not quick format and not letting the installer do
it) and got new media from HP. All went well today.

If you haven't already done it, I would try to eliminate (or at least
reduce) the possibility of a hardware-related problem by running HP's Vision
Diagnostics. This is the utility that HP runs internally.

Run the full comprehensive test (can't remember the exact name) -- not the
quick test. And you might consider burning-in the machine by running a
continuous loop overnight (or over a day or so) while you wait for your
replacement discs to arrive.

For this purpose, I usually select a loop value of 5000 -- just to make sure
it does not stop by itself. And you can opt to have the test stop on an
error -- or just review the log results when you are tired of it running.

want to run it from a USB flash drive or a CD. Which ever you select, make
sure your BIOS is set to boot off of your desired device.

Other things to check would include (in diminishing priority);

1. Making sure your drive is connected to the main board using the black
SATA ports -- and not the white SAS ports.

2. Making sure your exact drive model is qualified for use in the Z800
(workstation performance tolerances can be tight and it can make a
difference).

3. Running something like Seagate SeaTools on the drive to confirm its

My opinion, assuming this had been a functioning machine and none of the
aforementioned tests result in errors -- I'd assume it was your installation
disc too.

Lastly, once you get up and running, you might consider reviewing the latest
drivers available for your machine.
