Back in the quad cart machine days, I worked as a prod mgr at a TV station. The chief engineer had his most senior engineer loading spots to the cart machine during the normal day shift. When I asked why that, instead of someone less senior doing it on the night shift, the CE explained it this way.
"Make-goods" cost the station money and since this was usually for technical reasons it came out of engineering's hide. As such, he put the best person on it and did it during the time that the traffic department was at work. That way any non-technical issues could immediately be brought to their attention and dealt with. Faster turnaround to resolve any issues and fewer errors due to technical issues or QC issues.
Of course, that's when TV stations were a license to print money.
