I've been using something like this for about a year. Another editor (Mark Burton) and I worked it out last fall, and posted the info to one of the Avid Forums.

I've got a new, better version of that interface I've been working with for the last month, too, based on the Lemur app rather than TouchOSC. I haven't written up the article and done screenshots yet, but when I do, I'll post it here.
Having a portable control surface is much nicer than clicking around that Avid mixer. The only downside is that after growing accustomed to this way of working, I use two iPads now so I can leave the control surface active all the time. Great use for an iPad 1 :)
