Re: [Avid-L2] Re: 25 to 30 (29.97) was: PAL question

Ok, my main main subject is classical music, multicam recordings. In this genre you would never go for a pitch adjust. This might not be true for a feature/documentary but from my point of perspective I keep everything as stated before: there is no way to cheap-f*** around the material if you want to keep the intention. Speeding up or slowing down is not what a representation of the original product should look like imho. Sure, a frame rate conversion is not what the original material was in the first place but with nowadays techniques it's way more reflecting the original work that frame rate changes only - with all the draw-backs. As always the worm has to be swallowed by the client - either on the bill or on the material, his decision.
Since we all know that/what we can do (a lot) in post that does not mean we should not primarily keep the intentions, again: imho.

And for pos-producing it: request the materials in its original framerate. Suggest "shoot interlaced" if there is a frame-rate conversion coming up. Don't be static about this ("it's not 'film-style' (ha-ha, those frame rates are suggesting it's TV anyway...). Deliver in the original framerate. Charge i/p25->p24->i/p29.97 including all the audio mashups or a straight for t i25 to i29.97 conversion (Alchemist, adaptive-mode or any linear converter), do the math, present and let them decide.

This is best ONLY if everything is progressive or PsF. You will then have to send the audio through the proper corrections to change speed in sync without pitch changes.
