Hi Mark, I didn't face this problem before but it could be cause by a hidden alpha channel in your PSD file, so may be it's better to chek it again in photoshop. And for the effect editor I use the toolset Effect editing so that the effect editor is always open. Actually I use all the toolsets, I have them maped in the keyboard, I find it easier like this.
