The other amusement is getting Excel to show numbers as timecode.
Anyone got any tips on that?

Not always...
Most old style EDL's have a fixed char pos, where the remaining empty
chars
are filled with spaces.
NLE's introduced the TABS, but this is not always the case...

EDL's are plain vanilla tab-delimited databases. Should easily import as
such into Excel or Numbers.
