[Avid-L2] Re: How Avid kills editors

Avid isn't killing editors... profit maximizing, job consolidating
corporations are doing that.

Avid is simply surviving and giving their deep pocket (corporations)
customers what they want.

The producer /reporter/ shooter/window washer job position has already
eliminated hundreds of shooter and editor jobs in broadcast news.

Management had to downsize newsrooms to stay alive. 20 years ago stations
and networks divided a 3 slice advertising pie. Now they must share a 600
channel market. You can't generate much profit with a 1/600th slice of
that pie. The solution - gut costs.

And it's not just editors. Look inside local and even some network
newsrooms. The TD, audio person, director and three camera operators are
now just two people sitting in front of Star Trek like control panels -
doing everything.

The bottom line is that management can no longer afford
the luxury of specialized skills. To them, editing is now just typing.

Everyone must know how to do it. Editors must be or become producer/
writer /shooters too or they won't survive long in this economy. I Don't
agree with this philosophy - in fact it creates vanilla often soulless story
telling. Unfortunately... It's simply the new reality
