I've seen this sort of weirdness when I've imported a graphic file that turned out to be CMYK rather than RGB, but since you've already said that Photoshop identifies this file as RGB this can't be the problem. Unless.... whatever header information Photoshop uses to identify the file is incorrect. By changing to Lab colour and back again to RGB you may actually be converting the file and fixing the header problem at the same time.
