It is interesting that so many of us want Avid, and more specifically the editorial division, to excel and be better than they are.
From where I sit, the genesis of that frustration is directly related to Avid allowing the feature sets to grow stale and antiquated over a truly unbelievable period of 10 years. And now, even after the 64-bit overhaul, we are still saddled with the same obsolete features -- which certainly don't need to be enumerated again here.
To be fair, customers of many professional media products look forward in anticipation to new and innovative features being introduced. But I can't think of one other media product company that is so behind the technological "eight ball" -- and has such an enormous "catch-up" requirement -- just to get to unity (no pun intended). And that requirement comes at a time where there have been massive layoffs and brain-drain at the company.
It is an inarguable fact that Avid has squandered numerous opportunities to move the editing products forward over the past 10 or so years -- on many, many levels. And I would be lying if I did not express deep concern over Dave's pre-NAB comment of:
"Now, we can sit back and take a look at the landscape on how and where each product-Media Composer, Symphony and NewsCutter- sit in the marketplace".
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/Avid-L2/message/101139
However, in my opinion, there is no time to sit back and survey the landscape. And as customers of Avid products, we cannot afford to do business with a company that is content to "sit back". 64-bit aside, haven't we had enough of that?
Regardless of what the competition may or may not be offering -- there are 10-year old problems that need to be solved right now -- and there can be no confusion or mystery about what those problems are. Most, if not all of us, have listed them over and over. Unless, of course, Avid is simply not listening.
I understand there are complex economic drivers that dictate how money and resources are spent in product development at a company that has several divisions. And I empathize with the plight of having a limited budget that must be used to address a massive "To Do" list. But "sitting back" sounds an awful lot like the 10 years that were squandered -- and they were squandered in spite of our repeated pleas to have features fixed or updated.
Yes, Apple handed Avid and Adobe a unexpected gift. But that gift will be once again squandered by Avid unless they fire on all cylinders and releases a steady stream of innovative features which solve old problems -- and which differentiate their products from their "new" competition.
As much as I hate to admit it, and in spite of desperately wanting Avid to excel and succeed -- maybe we've just been asking over and over for something that is simply never going to happen.
Isn't one of the definitions of insanity doing the same thing over and over again -- and expecting a different outcome?
