I had very serious issues with Firewire capture from my Sony DSR 45P both with MC 5.x and 5.5.x on Mac OS 10.6.x. Raised a bug with Avid who pursued it without resolution. This was rock solid on MC 4.x. I spent weeks trying to nail this by testing on other machines and decks at my university but it was not just my Mac and my deck. Seems better in MC6. One thing you can try - turn off 'Output to DV Device' in the Timeline video quality menu. My Mac and my deck were A-OK with FCP7 and Premiere Pro.
