In the Avid ISIS readme it says;
Macintosh clients are able to create folders and filenames with characters that are not visible on Windows operating systems, or supported in Avid Unity ISIS. Remember, the following characters are illegal in workspace, workgroup, user, device, and storage group names: \, /, :, *, ?, ", <, >, +, and |
So that's official ;-)

Subject: [Avid-L2] Re: Problem with old media
When I had to do an upgrade from Meridian to Adrenaline a few years back, forward-slashes were the culprit. I've gotten different answers as to what is and isn't an illegal character. I guess the safest assumption is to use alpha-numeric only, but I never had any troubles with underscores nor dashes. A colon, semi-colon, brackets, exclamation points, etc should be regarded as illegal. The Meridian systems were forgiving of such things, but the newer systems are not.
If you haven't done it already, go in the Finder level into your media folder and use the search field up top to search for various non-alpha/numeric characters. Also be sure you don't have that media folder set up in the "Privacy" folder in the Spotlight Preferences pane--I don't think the search field will work if that folder is in there.

You may be forced to pull any of those sorts of files if you have them. You might try saving a copy of any illegals then try renaming the file, replacing the illegal things with a letter. Worth a shot.

Create a title to create a new omfi folder on the drive. Take the problem files that you have fixed the permissions on and put them into this new omfi folder and let Avid rebuild the database. Create a new folder in avid and drag the rebuild msm database file to the bin and see if Avid populates the bin with clips of the problem media. This will tell you if the media works or not and eliminates relinking issues that might be causing you to not see the problem media in a final sequence. Also depending on the history of the media be it PC or mac to PC you might have those "_" ghost files in addition to the real media files. I think if you look you will see the _ files that are small or even 0K. I really don't think the permissions of the actual media files causes problems but the databases etc... certainly do.
