For those who have not seen it, this is exactly what cache-a is doing. Keeps a raid protected "Vtape" harddrive networked and online for quick loading or recovery of files. An archive directory of all tapes and files is kept on the networked appliance(s) and backed up to tape.
The goal is to have the catalog (and some media) online and updated for all users at all times. And to allow asset managers (like catdv) to check-in, check-out and index files from anywhere, for seamless library operations.
In theory, anyway.
I don't believe raw LTFS drives can offer any of these advantages. Although one could build their own server, cache-a saves some of the expense and frustration of doing this yourself.
You could edit from the Vtape until you needed a file from tape. Then things would get ridiculous.
Anyone recall what happened when you used a jazz drive for avid mefiafiles? ;-)
