[Avid-L2] OT: Alexa 25 to 23.98 conversion

Hi all,
We're preparing to do post on a commercial that is being shot in
Europe. The client is shooting two sets of spots within the same
production: one for UK and a package of four for Canada.

As of this moment, the production company is planning on shooting on
the Alexa in PAL. We have been asked by the agency when it would be
appropriate to do our conversions for Canada in both HD and SD. We
are not setup to edit in PAL and, typically, this client has
repurposed their footage for international markets.

I'm trying to wrap my head around why it would make any sense to shoot
PAL in this instance. Our understanding is that the UK spot will be
edited in France.

I haven't edited in Europe so I have no idea what the limitations are
regarding what formats they are editing. I assumed it would be just
as easy for them to edit in 23.98 as it would for us. Am I
misunderstanding this?

Regarding the standards conversion, we've reached out to a few places
in Manhattan regarding the conversion process, etc. We've been looking
around at instances of people converting from Alexa or even RED from
25 to 23.98 and haven't found many anecdotes about it. Is this simply
a bad idea? What's the recommended process to convert from the Alexa
format to maintain resolution for the eventual color correct, etc?

I'm really curious as to any argument FOR going to 25 to 23.98 as I
don't think there is much to justify that workflow. If there are any
gotchas or potential pitfalls we should be wary of or can highlight to
our client to hopefully change their approach, I would love to hear
them.

Thanks all,
Scott
