Seeing as how no-one's answered your question directly, John. Yes, as a
first principal I generally tend to aim for the greatest dynamic range for
any particular scene, just as you describe.
Most of my work, as yours, is to make it look real. I don't get to do a lot
of drama where I'm aiming to achieve a look; if I were, then I might allow
the images to float a little more. Most folk seem to think my grades look
pretty good.
