Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Blackmagic buys Teranex

Interesting. I was wondering what Teranex was going to do considering the
predicament they were in.

About three months ago, IDT - who made the "scaler" chip that handles the
reformatting work for the Teranex hardware - sold their video solutions
group to Qualcomm. That group contained all of the IP for their scaler chip
and video processing technology and it was announced that Qualcomm would be
discontinuing all existing and future silicon using that technology
effective immediately. Though Teranex would be able to do a last time buy
on the chipset they use it was effectively EOL. This purchase also included
all of the "HQV" technology in IDT's portfolio.

(It is believed that Qualcomm purchased the technology and engineering team
so they could bring advanced video processing and playback capabilities to
their Snapdragon family of ARM processors. I suspect that they'll come out
next year with a series of Snapdragons with the capability that are focused
on the smart television market. They could be a very compelling offering.)
