One of my issues about this is the big differences in contrast response in consumer TVs (and their respective calibration), getting worse and worse towards the cheaper end of the market.
Some of them should be called "Tele Crunchers" rather than TVs, for their abysmal black and white response...
I understand different flat panel technologies are used depending on generations, price etc... but I feel that using 0 to 100 IRE is almost
impossible to safely rely on for broadcast.
Whites are easier to calm down in that respect but I'm not confident about sending out something with a maximum of 10-90 IRE for example just because I know a fairly good percentage of TVs are not able to handle anything more than that.
