I have never dealt with HD tape, and have not done a batch
capture for 5 or 6 years, so this is mostly a long-shot guess on
my part. However, in BetaSP days, if I popped in a tape re-wound
all the way to the beginning, sometimes the slop at the very head
of the tape would throw bad TC info into the Avid, which would
then complain with the error that the tape was not drop frame --
even though it most definitely was.
Does the problem persist if you FF the tape just a bit to known
good signal, eject and then re-insert the tape for batch capture?
