[Avid-L2] Re: MPEG Streamclip revisited

Welcome to the world of small market broadcasting. To answer John's
question- No, IT doesn't necessarily provide workflow solutions to our
problems. Even if they did, they'd have to get somebody else to spend the
money, which is nearly impossible these days.

Right now they're working up a way to use GVG Procoder to handle
conversions of MPEG commercials to something our on-air server can handle.
That's fine by me, but for some time now my only way of getting the work
done was to use Streamclip, as my ancient MCA 2.2.10 cannot deal with MPEG
files.
We've had another copy of Procoder in-house this entire time, but it was
dedicated solely to the News department. Any suggestion of Creative
Services using it was met with concerns over crashing the box.

This latest round of arguments is over DVCPRO50 and DVCPROHD, which from
what I understand are Mac only and may not work with a Windows based
Procoder. I suggested we test out Raylight and/or products from Calibrated
and was again beaten over the head with the MPEG LA rule. Calibrated is in
fact a legit licensee, though they're not going to be able to deal with our
MPEG-2 issues.

The one interesting thing is that now this issue is on a message board, IT
wants to resolve it as quickly as possible for fear of it being read by
MPEG LA. :)
