I think it was around BCC 3 that they stopped including the version number in the effect names and from then on they were forward compatible more or less. I'm not sure if they are backward compatible too. Obviously if a new version has a new effect it won't be backward compatible but if it is an unchanged effect I don't see why it wouldn't work. I've also had problems when different avx 1 vs. avx 1.5 versions have been used. I'd love to know what the official word is for forward and backward compatibility.
