Re: [Avid-L2] Re: XDCAM EX 35mbts

Avid 5.x can't use XDCam media realtime above 50Mbs - and the Nano records XDCam inside an MXF wrapper, so you'll have to transcode if you go higher than 50Mbs on the Nano- or try another codec like prores if you're going to stick AMA.

However, you should have NO problem with the XDCamEX media at 35Mbs. It's critical that you keep the ENTIRE folder from the SxS card - don't just copy the media- copy the entire folder to your drive before trying to AMA. Avid needs to see the folder structure- otherwise, it won't work and you'll jump through 20 hoops just to get the media into your system. If you copy the entire folder, it's a cake walk- don't link to the individual files, link to the entire folder. Also, make sure you've got the correct Sony AMA plug-in. It's not provided by Avid in the regular media composer installer: it's a separate file. I think you can get it form the XDCamEX mini-site, but probably also from Avid.

http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite/ should work... or google 'Sony AMA plug in.'

hope that helps.

We shot tests at various bit rates at 1080 p 23.98, recorded to Nano, and I brought the files via AMA into a Mac Avid MC 5.5 at 145, 180, 220 and 280 MBps. The 220 and 280 rates had black frames like you did. Maybe Avid can't handle the datarates?

The EX3 shoots mp4 natively (which is fine for FCP and Transfer Tool) and I couldn't get Avid AMA to link to it. The EX3 can wrap clips to mxf, but evidently you have to set the camera to shoot that way. I did some research and the solution is to use the XDCAM clip browser to rewrap to mxf. It's Export>MXF for NLE, and choose a destination folder. Avid AMA can then link to it.
