John, your criticism applies almost equally to Apple. At least Gates
paid for QDOS. What did Jobs pay Xerox and the people who developed
Mach, BSD, and straight-up UNIX?
Sure, Apple created and commercialized a lot of great stuff. But their
stuff was always expensive. I think MS, Intel, and the IBM clone
companies deserve some credit for creating functional and useful
machines that a whole lot of people could afford.

Also, what Bill Gates is doing with his fortune is mostly
amazing...arguably sometimes misguided, but still amazing and will I
think make the world a better place. Don't know what Jobs has done (or
intended to have done) with his fortune; perhaps we'll find out soon.
Sure, he doesn't owe anyone anything, and he left behind quite a legacy.

Sad to see him go.
