Re: [Avid-L2] Terrific quality web video

In addition to what Philip has mentioned,

Convert non-square pixel aspect ratio (PAR) to square.

Don't use FCP (not sure how MC is these days) to scale; i.e., use a "higher" quality scaler like After Effects or Compressor,... don't know about Squeeze anymore, but Episode Pro (version 5 and earlier) used to suck at scaling (horrible aliasing), but has gotten somewhat better with version 6. I've heard that Premiere has really improved its scaling with recent versions to the extent it supposed to be better than After Effects.

Crushing blacks a bit can help with noisy source and help diminish blocking in dark areas.

But -- garbage in, garbage out. These days, with the bandwidth we have to work with, source quality is the main determinant of why the BMW video looks good. Pre-processing is still important, but not nearly as important as 5 years ago.

Plus, in general, don't use YouTube or NetFlix as a measure of what can be achieved for web delivery. Vimeo.com, as one example, might be a better indicator.
