I recently threw that Mac OS 10.7 on a spare partition to play with, and the very next day something I'd been wondering about for a long while suddenly became astonishingly clear: people weren't getting dumber - they were switching to iPhones and Lion.

I was astonished at how my typing and spelling suddenly went from "pretty damned accurate" to "meth-addled wolverine" with just one simple OS "upgrade".

Fortunately, like most Mac "features", once I disabled it I could actually get some work done again.
