Let me second Jim's recommendation of the little Canons. One of
our reporters likes gadgets and brought his own HFM40 on a shoot.
On a whim, we used it for a locked off wide shot (classical
concert shoot) and it looked great. We have since borrowed it
from him for some other simple sub-camera work. Have used in on
air several times now. Face-tracking auto focus, quite good auto
everything, nice stabilization, makes it a real easy camera to
use for non-cameramen, and also in situations where we want to be
discreet. Well under your budget, too.
