[Avid-L2] Is there a way to change the default of how smart tools select?

So, I know you can customize smart tools, but the SPECIFIC question is about a problem I was having.

I have a stereo track - a score "stem" from a show - and I use it on tracks 3 and 4 AND on 5 and 6. If they overlap, which they often do, when I use either smart tool "arrow" and click on ONE of the tracks, it selects all FOUR. I obviously want to select the stereo pair, but the only way to NOT select BOTH stereo pairs is to deselect the tracks I don't want. This is NOT the behavior of the old segment select. All four tracks are NOT selected when I try to use the smart tool, but the smart tool AUTOMATICALLY enables them! This is ridiculous behavior. Please don't say "it's not a bug, it's a feature." I will have to kill someone.

If I want to select a track, I don't want the tracks I haven't selected just because they're from the same fricking source! Am I missing a setting?
