1- Go into Timeline Settings > Edit Tab and enable:
a) allow only one segment arrow to be enable at a time and
b) clicking in the TC track or "ruler" will exit you from Smart Tool.
2- Map the SmartTool toggle button from the Command Palette to a comfortable spot. Since I like the "JKL" functions mapped to SDF, I put the SmartTool toggle on Shift-S. A quick move of my pinkie to get to the Shift Key and my ring finger is already on "S" so it's easy to toggle on and off.
3- Then experiment with the combinations of tools you like. I've been getting used to Red Segment mode, Yellow & Red Trim, and Transition manipulation all enabled.
Note: I haven't been leaving SmartTools on all the time. Instead I toggle them on when I want them.

My impression is probably skewed by most of my work being online and finishing but I don't really see smart tools giving me anything I didn't already have just with a slightly different activation method. Curious what gems I might be missing out on. What have people found in the way of new techniques enabled by smart tools. Not trying to be negative here I want to increase my efficiency.
